FROM C.P GARCIA AVE, FORMERLY KATIPUNAN AVE., IN QUEZON CITY

If you’re coming from Quezon City, take the route from C.P. Garcia Avenue (formerly Katipunan Ave.) going to Aurora Boulevard. Follow the road going to Marcos Highway. Don’t go to the flyover.

Route 1:
In Marcos Highway, slow down before reaching Sta. Lucia Mall. At the intersection, turn right to V.V. Soliven Center (Felix formerly Imelda Ave.) Straight ahead. This is a long road passing by SM Hypermart, private villages in Cainta, etc. At the intersection (Cainta Junction), turn left to Ortigas Extension. 

Go straight to Ortigas Extension. Take the U-turn slot at Tikling area in Taytay (beside Manila East Hospital) before going up to Antipolo. In Antipolo, you will reach Hamaka (Triangle) Park, turn right here. Rizal Provincial Capitol and Ynares Sports Center should be on your left. Straight ahead. A few meters away is McDonalds. Turn right at Unciano Medical Center. Follow the signs that will lead you to Loreland Farm Resort.

Route 2:
Head for Sumulong Highway. That’s when you see Masinag Market to your left, you will have to make a right turn to Sumulong Highway. You will pass by Valley Golf Country Club and the many establishments in the overlooking area of Antipolo.

Follow the highway until you reach the  intersection of Taktad Road. Turn right. Go straight then turn left at Aquino Blvd. Go straight and when you see the first triangle park (Aquino Park), turn right. Go straight.

Turn left at Hamaka Park Triangle which is near Ynares Sports Center. Follow the road leading to Unciano Medical Center. McDonalds should be on your left. From there, turn right. There are signs giving directions to Loreland Farm Resort. Follow the signs.

FROM PASIG

From Ortigas Avenue in Pasig City, go straight to Ortigas Extension leading to Rizal Province. Take the U-turn slot at Tikling area in Taytay (beside Manila East Hospital) before going up to Antipolo. In Antipolo, you will reach Hamaka Triangle Park, turn right here. Ynares Sports Center and Rizal Provincial Capitol should be on your left. Straight ahead. A few meters away is McDonalds. Turn right at Unciano Medical Center. Follow the signs that will lead you to Loreland Farm Resort.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:

Antipolo City bound terminals are strategically located at the following areas:

1. Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City
2. Robinson's Galleria, Ortigas Center, Pasig City
3. SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City
4. EDSA Central, Mandaluyong City

The nearest drop off point when riding the LRT is the Santolan Station in Marikina City. Antipolo bound public utility vehicles (FX and Jeep) going to Antipolo Cathedral are available here. Loreland Farm Resort is just a short tricycle ride from the city proper of Antipolo City. Fare is Php 50.00.

There were cultural performances participated in by local schools. The travel mart became a venue for students to showcase their talents in singing and dancing Filipino music. Other activities throughout the week included fashions shows, lectures and seminars on tourism and hostpitality, etc.

The city of Antipolo with it's close proximity to Metro Manila is probably the most visited by tourists in the province. It is home to the miraculous Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage or Nuestra Senora dela Paz Y Buenviaje. All year round people from all walks of life from all over the Phillippines visit Antipolo to pray for safe travel.

Not only is Antipolo famous for being a Pilgrimage Capital of the Philippines, it is also home to a number of mountain resorts, restaurants and unique destinations ideal for family bonding, rest and recreation.

When one thinks of Antipolo, it's not surprising that they would also think about its famous delicacies -like roasted cashew nuts or kasoy. Choose adobo for that flavorful taste. There's also rice cake or suman which is best eaten with something sweet like sugar, peanut butter or coco jam.

The town of Binangonan located at the southern part of Rizal province is "The Fishing Center of Rizal". It is strategically located within the vicinity of Laguna de Bay rich in fishery resources. A thriving fish port and fishing industry largely contributes to its economic development.

Binangonan is also home to both upscale and budget getaways. It is the only town in the province that has a world class casino being host to Thunderbird Resorts and Casino. The town of Pililla known as "The Agricultural Haven of Rizal" is blessed with a wide area for agricultural production. In the mountainous area of Pililla lies Sitio Bugarin of Barangay Halayhayin now famous for producing the sweetest pineapple in the country. 

They have also ventured into processing pineapple wine. Showcased in various fairs, Bugarin's pineapple was declared as Pililla's One Town One Product.

Located at the south-eastern portion of Rizal province is the town of Baras. It is the birthplace of Sikaran - distinct Filipino martial art that involves hand and foot fighting. According to locals, It has been practised in Baras long before the Spaniards came in the Philippines in the 16th century. 

Hailed as the "The Organic Town of Rizal", Baras has become the first town in the entire Philippines to actively promote, develop and advocate organic agriculture. Recently, Baras Organic Products Center was launched. The products put on sale in the Center include organic vegetables, rice and fruits.

Located next to Antipolo is the town of Teresa named as "The Showcase of eco-friendly environment and eco-based products". The town is now into production of concrete products like hollow blocks and bricks made out of residual waste (styrofor, sando bags, soft plastics and sachets). It is a learning laboratory to local and foreign visitors who tour the Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility.

When in Teresa, one should also visit the St. Rose of Lima Parish Church, Teresa Orchard and Nursery, St. Martha's Farm for the Panggasius or Cream Dory Fish and Coral Farm (Crocodile Farm).

There are still destinations in Tanay that I haven't explored yet but have heard good stories about  including Paseo Rizal which is an events and dining venue. For adventure seekers, there are Kalinawan Cave, Masungi Rock, Daraitan River, Tinipak and Kinabuan Falls. Hopefully I would have the chance to explore these areas.

Very close to Metro Manila is the town of Cainta which is named "ICT Hub of the Province". Cainta is the gateway to the Province of Rizal. It is home to multinational companies like Monde MY San Corp., BF Metals among others and large supermarkets. 

Despite increasing urbanization, cottage industries emerge such as the development of water lily products into bags, wallets, bags and other accessories. These indigenous materials are in abundace in Cainta and Taytay.

Taytay is originally the Garments Capital of the Philippines and home of quality crafted builder's woodworks, now it is fast emerging as the Commercial Hub of the Province of Rizal with the setting up of big retail establishments like SM City and Puregold.

Overall the travel mart was a success as it was participated in by various stakeholders in the tourism, education and trade industries. Once again, Rizalenos proved that they can pull all resources together to come up with an exhibit showcasing the best of the province. 

Although this is just one of the many steps to promote trade and tourism in the province, alot of work is still needed to be done to fully maximize the province's potential. During one of the panel discussions, it was said that the province of Rizal used to be one of the richest provinces in the country. As you may know, many cities in Metro Manila used to be part of Rizal province - Makati, Mandaluyong, Pasig, San Juan and many others. As years went on, these municipalities detached from the province and became independent cities.

As far as tourism industry is concerned, we wonder why among all regions in CALABARZON, Rizal seems to be behind. Is there a lack of collective effort among stakeholders? Is there a shortage of destinations to be visited or explored? Is there a lack of infrastructure development that would entice tourists to visit the province? Is there a priority on provincial tourism at all? 

May I take this opportunity to comment on the road networks in Rizal. For one, I am quite impressed with the long, smooth stretch of road in Antipolo going to Tanay. Many roads in the province have also been greatly improved. However, Ortigas Extension in Pasig going to entry point in Cainta remain a bottleneck. Commuters have been painstakingly negotiating this road for years. I hope something can be done. Another thing is the lack of street lights in major thoroughfares. Until now, the road going up to Antipolo from Taytay is very dark. I hope there won't be any untoward traffic or road incident before something can be done in this road going to Antipolo. These are just some areas that I frequent, I am not quite sure with other areas just yet.

Whatever it lacks, I am confident that it can be addressed by all stakeholders - government officials, private sector and public. As they say it is still a work in progess and anyone involved is vital in this development. 

This is Capilla de San Miguel, named in honor of the patron saint of Currimao. Being the focal point of Sitio Remedios, all homes are located on both sides of the Capilla. Just how it was during the old days, the town's main center is the Church with the Plaza and Municipio just a walk away. I was told that the Church should always be in higher elevation. That way people can always converge in the Church whenever there is a calamity or any natural disaster. It's also a sign of respect to God the Most High.

Take a closer look of the Capilla and notice the huge tree infront that provides shade - perfect for  spiritual reflection and communing with God. There's also an image of St. Michael the Archangel on top welcoming guests as they enter the Capilla.

Capilla de San Miguel is Paoay Church inspired highlighted by huge buttresses on both sides.  Arte de Espanol chairs are strategically placed on open spaces for groups to converge. 

Plaza Manzanilla located infront of Capilla de San Miguel is perfect for gathering and dining. During holidays and special occasions, a wide table is set up here where guests can dine in style.

This is Teatro Ilocano where guests may perform their artistic skills to an audience in an open theater.

Teatro Ilocano is flanked by fountains, trees and flowers. Very ideal for live performances.

There's also a fishing community near Sitio Remedios. Every mornig, you can see them going about their daily routine. Here you can walk around and experience authentic rural life. 

The village with its commanding view of West Phillippine Sea is ideal for watching sunset. On the side is the Torre ni Mariano which is a recreated watchtower that used to dot Ilocos fishing villages.

It was in late 2005 when the idea to create a heritage vilage was conceived. Architect Rex Hofilena submitted a sketch to Dr. Cuanang to put this dream into reality. In an effort to rescue homes about to be demolished in various parts of Ilocos Region, these were transferred to Sitio Remedios to be preserved. 

Balay Batac is the largest in the Sitio. Named after a town in Ilocos Norte famous for its sons  including Gen. Artemio Ricarte, Bishop Gregorio Aglipay and President Ferdinand Marcos, among many others. 

Let's take a look at this grand Ilocano home.

At the ground floor is a sitting area with paintings of Dr. Cuanang's parents, Mariano and Remedios rendered by National Artist Bencab (hidden). The one shown above is a portrait of Maestra Remedios by Antonio Leano.

Stairway to the second floor is flanked by antique furniture, paintings of Ilocos churches and religious icons.

At the second floor is a sitting area where paintings of Bishop Aglipay and Luna brothers, Juan and Antonio are displayed. 

Strategically positioned are elevated chairs overlooking West Philippine Sea. I haven't seen anything like this in the longest time. I can only imagine how it was like living during that time.

Inside the bedroom is a reading area overlooking Plaza de Manzanilla. By choice there are no television sets instead a collection of books is provided for leisure reading.

Balay Piddig is where I stayed during my stay at Sitio Remedios. It is named after a town where the famous Basi Revolt of 1807 was waged to protest the government's monopoly of wine industry. More about Balay Piddig at my first entry - warm welcome at Sitio Remedios.

Balay Dingras is an elevated bungalow just like Balay Piddig. Dingras is one of the eastern towns in Ilocos Norte famous for its roofless church ruins and old houses.

It has a spacious front balcony  finished in cement tiles from San Nicolas, perfect for family bonding and enjoying the quiet provincial life. It can accommodate 4 guests at its two airconditioned bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom. 

Balay Bacarra is named after the town next to Laoag City famous for its centuries old church made of red bricks which has leaned over the years. This bungalow is made from wood salvaged from a home in Bacarra.

It has a living room with daybed, Filipino designed furniture, batibot chairs and chandelier soften by crocheted table cover, white draperies and pillows. It also features pictures of famous fashion photographer Wig Tysman.

The bedroom is named Kuarto ni Antonia in honor of its first occupant Antonia Bersola-Babao. The painting of Ilocano Balasang - a single or unmarried woman is a gift of National Artist Bencab to Dr. Cuanang.

Balay Radrillo is named from the Ilocano rendition of 'ladrillo' meaning brick in Spanish which adorn the front entrance of this house.

Second floor has a dining cum living area too with a rocking chair by the window overlooking Capilla de San Miguel.

Next home is Balay Puraw meaning white in Ilocano. Inspired by the arrival of American architecture in mid-20th century using cement balusters painted in white. This two storey affair may be rented seperately.

First floor has its own living area with paintings and portraits of Ms. Imelda Marcos (hidden).

This is the second floor dining cum living area. This largest bedroom is also located here with two king size beds.

What a relaxing sight! There's a daybed at the balcony overlooking Plaza de Manzanilla and Capilla San Miguel.

Balay Pasuquin is a one bedroom bungalow named after one of Ilocos Norte towns famous for biscocho, salt and ruins of ancient church.

What can I say? I am speechless with this outdoor shower.

I was totally inspired after going around each home of Sitio Remedios. This is one of the few private property developments in the country that focuses on heritage conservation. In a time of modern infrastructure in hotel accommodations, Dr. Cuanang did something differently - that is to build a heritage village one can only experience at Sitio. That's what makes Sitio Remedios such a uniqe destination.

If you have been to heritage towns in Taal, Batagas and Vigan, Ilocos Sur - all these places evoke the same nostalgic appeal. I am sure there are more destinations in the Phiippines - Pampanga, Laguna, Quezon, Cebu, Bohol among others that can be developed as heritage sites. Private investors who infuse heritage in their developments take pride in our being as Filipinos.

I think many of us hunger for that sense of belongingness in our past, a sense of community in a small town village, a sense of root to our family, a sense of history and heritage. In the age of fast paced urban life, how many of us really appreciate heritage and take pride in it?

Dinner was served at Balay Piddig. Set-up was accented by crocheted tablecloth, fresh kadena de amor, glasses with candlelights, native placemats, linen napkins and tableware. At the background is an oil painting and on the other side is the banggerahan or airing cupboard which is typical to Filipino homes.

Balay Piddig has an open layout. From the dining table, one can easily navigate the living area where the daybed and piano are located.

I was totally impressed with the dining set-up. The long travel to Sitio Remedios was definitely worth it. 

For dinner, Native Chicken Soup was served first. You can actually taste that it is organic and fresh. No broth cubes were used.

Then the popular Ilocano dish - Pinakbet or Pakbet. The word is contracted form of the Ilocano word pinakebbet, meaning 'shrunk' or 'shrivelled'. The original Ilocano pinakbet uses bagoong. The basic vegetables used in this dish include bitter melon, eggplant, okra, string beans, chili peppers, winged beans and others. This vegetable meal is the one that I really like.

Although I'm not much of a pork eater, I know I just had to try Bagnet while in Ilocandia. My self imposed ban on pork was lifted while on vacation. Bagnet is boiled and deep fried pork belly. Unlike Lechon Kawali, Bagnet is fried even longer. When freshly cooked, the meat portion tastes good.  Best served with KBL - kamatis, bagoong, lasona or native onions. For a while I thought, KBL - does that also mean Kilusang Bagong Lipunan? 

For drinks I had a fine blend of fresh Yellow Watermelon and for dessert I had Linga (sesame seeds).

It was such a delightful dinner. I spent the evening away at the porch enjoying fresh air, quiet night and sky full of stars. Next day will be full of surprises.

I woke up quite late next day and had my breakfast at nine in the morning. And what a surprise! Breakfast was served at Balay Batac next to where I stayed at Balay Piddig. I was impressed with yet another dining set-up. Breakfast table facing the window where fresh air and sunlight come in, an imposing painting of Katipunan at the back and at the ceiling there's a glass chandelier.

For breakfast, fried Espada or Beltfish was served. Probably available only in Ilocos region. It is crunchy and best served with sukang Ilocos.

Of course, how can we not have Longanisa which is a common viand for breakfast typical in Filipino homes. It is a type of smoked chorizo or sausage stuffed inside a hog casing. Although there are several varieties of Longanisa all over the Philippines, the Ilocano Longanisas are garlicky, spicy and tangy influenced by the Mexican Salami.

Freshly brewed coffee to end the meal.

Overall, highly recommended as a bed and breakfast destination. Lunch and Dinner had to be arranged in advance as fresh ingredients are only procured when there are confirmed guests. The household staff in their traditional Filipino clothes were very efficient. Thanks to them for making my stay very comfortable.

At the end of the Avenida are steps leading to Plaza San Miguel located at the south side of the chapel. Its water feature has a statue of San Miguel slaying the devil. Fruit bearing trees provide shade.

Finally, my 'provincial home' at Sitio Remedios is Balay Piddig. Rayboy shared that Piddig is one of the eastern towns in Ilocos Norte where most of the materials used to construct this house came from.  The town is also famous for the Basi Revolt of 1807 where locals protested the government's monopoly of wine industry.

At the Balay, I was also welcomed by the household staff - a housekeeper and waiter who handed me a cold glass of dalandan juice and warm towel. I felt welcomed instantly by their warm Ilocano hospitality. This is the kind of local hospitality that makes Sitio Remedios unique.

Balay Piddig is a one bedroom home equipped with bathroom, hot and cold shower, dining and living areas. It has capiz windows, hard wood flooring, nipa/sawali ceiling, Filipino furniture and banggerahan beside the dining area. The house also features dainty cut wood (callado) on the entry porch - such a relaxing place to pass time, read a good book and have coffee.

I was surprised to know that the room I'll be staying at is named Kuarto ni Cecille, in honor of its first occupant the virtuoso classical pianist Cecille Licad. It was only earlier this year that I had a chance to watch Cecille Licad perform along with her contemporaries Lea Salonga and Lisa Macuja at CCP. It was such an honor to be staying at the same room.

Sitio Remedios keeps on surprising me. As I enter Kuarto ni Cecille, the scented smell of the room was so relaxing I wanted to hit the sack right away when suddently I noticed the petals with my name inscribed in it saying "Welcome, Sir Ramon"

The room is airconditioned with an oversized king bed topped with thick Ilocos abel blanket, white draperies and pillows. Very comfortable and relaxing.

Bathroom amenities include hot and cold shower, white towels, soaps and a popular Filipino toothpaste brand - Hapee. Even bathroom fixture including telephone shower are vintage and unique with Filipino taste.

Although rooms are equipped with modern conveniences such as airconditioning system, hot and cold shower, as a matter of policy, there are no TV, karaoke, radio and telephone lines at the Balay. Absence of which evoke the 1950's Ilocano heritage village setting. However, wi-fi is available for use to those who had to go online.

After settling stuff in my room, Rayboy and I continued to exchange stories about our experiences in resort operations, tourism opportunities in the countryside, customer experiences and much more over fresh dalandan juice. It was great to speak with like minded persons like Reyboy who is also in the same industry. He also shared his upcoming projects for Sitio Remedios like having a culinary tour featuring Ilocano dishes cooked by top chefs.

The National Art Gallery of the National Museum is located at the Old Congress Building. It was designed by Ralph Harrington Doanne and Antonio Toledo in 1918 which was originally intended as a National Library of the Philippines. 

Through the years it was decided to be used by the Congress. During the leadership of Claro M. Recto, the 1934 Constitutional Convention was held here. Philippinie Presidents were sworn in here too; Manuel L. Quezon in 1935, Jose P. Laurel in 1943 and Manuel Roxas in 1946.

The Old Cogress Building is not only important to my family not only because we are Filipinos but because my grandfather worked here as a lawyer until Congress was abolished in 1972 when Martial Law was declared.

Let me take you on a tour of the National Art Gallery starting with the main entrance. Almost all gallery doors at the Museum are inscribed with initials NM meaning National Museum. These were designed by the Father of Modern Philippine Sculpture, National Artist Napolen V. Abueva.

This is the grand lobby of the National Museum. Notice the detailed cornices, large columns and chandeliers designed by Impy Pilapil that greet visitors in a colonial era setting. Such a fitting prelude to a hall across where Bulwagang Luna at Hidalgo is located.

This masterpiece by Juan Luna is a painting depicting a scene at the exit room of the Roman Colleseum called Spoliarium, hence its name. It illustrates injured and dying gladiators being dragged in. (John Silva 2008)

The fact remains that when Luna and Felix Resureccion Hildalgo won the top awards in the Madrid Exposition of 1884, they proved to the world that indios could, despite their supposed barbarian race, paint better than the Spaniards who colonized them. (Ambeth R. Ocampo, "Rizal Without the Overcoat" 2000)

Rizal was footnoted in his speech that the Spoliarium "embodied the essence of our social, moral and political life: humanity is severe ordeal, humanity unredeemed, reason and idealism in open struggle with prejudice, fanaticism and justice..." (Leon Ma. Guerrero, "The First Filipino People" 2007)

Rizal who was friends with Luna and Hildalgo was inspired by the painting which led him to write his own 'Spoliarium' - that book would be called "Noli Me Tangere"

Just beside the entrance of Bulwagang Luna at Hidalgo are sculptures of National Artist Napoleon Abueva.

Gallery 1 is the Luis I. Ablaza Hall which contains colonial Philippine religious art of the 17th to the 19th centuries, prominent among which is a retablo from the Church of San Nicolas De Tolentino in Dimiao, Bohol - a National Cultural Treasure - together with a selection of carved religious images (santos), reliefs and paintings.

Gallery II is the Friends for Cultural Concern of the Philippines or FCCP Hall which contains the earliest Philippine paintings depicting a historical political event, The Basi Revolt series by Esteban Villanueva of Vigan (on indefinite loan from the Ilocos Sur Historical and Cultural Foundation). Painted in 1821, fourteen paintings, together declared as a National Cultural Treasure, depict in naive and vivid style the famous 1807 uprising in Ilocos against colonial rule that culminated in a bloody defeat at the Bantaoay River in San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur.

Gallery III is the Philippine art of the academic and romantic period, specifically the last three decades of the 19th century featuring especifically the Museum's considerable holdings of the work of Juan Luna and key contemporaries.

Gallery IV is the Fundacion Santiago Hall which contains the works of 19th century Filipino sculptors notably Isabelo Tampinco y Lacandola as well as his contemporaries and artistic successors whose works are distinguished by a strong academic and neo-classical style including Isabelo's sons Angel and Vidal, Graciano Nepomuceno, Anastacio Caedo, Florentino Caedo and Guillermo Tolentino.

Gallery V is the Dr. Jose Rizal Gallery. It contains works by the polymath and National Hero including four original sculptures and one fine drawing, view of Gendarmenmarkt from his 1886 sojourn in Berlin.

Gallery VI contains the work of late contemporaries and artistic successors of the generation of Luna and Hidalgo who were active in the late Spanish colonial period and on into American occupation and before the Second World War, including Fabian dela Rosa, Jorge Pineda, Irineo Miranda, Fernando Amorsolo, Pablo Amorsolo and numerous other artists who shaped Philippine art before and contemporaneous to the advent of Modernism in the country.

Galleries VII and VIII are under construction.

Gallery IX contains the work of great Philippine modernists featuring important works by Victorio Edades, Diosdado Lorenzo, Vicente Manansala, Carlos V. Francisco, Hernando R. Ocampo, Cesar Legaspi, Ang Kiukok and various other artists who were instrumental in setting bold directions for Philippine art from the 1930's into the decades of the post-war period.

Gallery X is the Museum Foundation Hall which is dedicated to the Progress of Medicine in the Philippines, a set of four large paintings by Carlos V. Francisco specially comissioned for the entrance hall of Philippine General Hospital in 1953. Declared a National Cultural Treasure, these important works were placed on indefinite loan to the National Museum by the University of the Philippines to secure their preservation for future generations.

Located at the third floor of the Museum are more galleries showcasing Philippine Textiles and Philippine Botany.

Located at the third level is the newly renovated session hall of the Old Congress Building. If only walls could talk, this room is a living witness to glorious past. A time when the Senate is an august body filled with intellectuals.

My overall experience at the National Museum was very satisfied. I am very much grateful to the management of the National Museum for working hard in maintaining the whole complex along with its numerous artifacts and works of art. All galleries were well thought of, highly maintained with its aircondition system and efficient lighting. The restrooms were clean too. 

Although the Museum is still a work in progress, there are still some areas for improvement which I would like to suggest if I may say so. 

1. Audio tours when the Museum is done with its renovations as this will increase efficiency in the sharing of knowledge to visitors. To those who are not familiar with audio tours, these are sets of recorded (tape) given to visitors in which they can press 'play' or 'pause' as they tour around the Museum.

2. Invite volunter guides to the Museum. I went there on a Sunday afternoon when there was a stream of visitors coming in, mostly families with children. It would be nice to have volunteer guides who are willing to share knowledge and speak about the Museum.

3. Convert the courtyard into an al fresco dining destination or coffee shop. I spent almost 5 hours going around and  was hoping I could buy some snacks or drinks within the Museum but there was none available. Maybe you could consider inviting a Filipino specialty restaurant to operate there. It would be income generating too for the Museum.

4. Since this is called National Art Gallery, would you also be showcasing other forms of art by renowned Filipino talents in Litretaure, Music, Dance, Film and Architecture? I am not quite sure if they are represented at the Museum of the Filipino People. That I had to go back because I ran out of time last time I visited.

5. Since most of the visitors are children who are on their field trips, please try to make some of the galleries appear more interactive by introducing ways that would encourage children to touch, smell or hear objects.

6. Souvenir Shop. It would be wonderful to take home something from the Museum. It could be postcards, books, pens or any Filipino made merchandise.

Next stop, National Museum of the Filipino People.

The tour started at the iconic Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) designed by National Artist Leandro Locsin. The CCP was Imelda's flagship project to promote culture and arts in the Philippines and to the world. It became the country's PR arm in showcasing the Philippines' best. It was a different time during the Marcoses, the Philppines had to prove to the world that we are a great nation rich in culture and the arts.

As with any government projects during that time, it was flooded with criticisms. How could a country like the Philippines build such a luxurious edifice when most of its people were reeling from poverty? One of the most controversial opponents to the CCP was Benigno Ninoy Aquino.  

After touring CCP, we rode an orange shuttle which was a smaller version of jeepney to tour other buildings at the complex. We passed by Manila Film Center, Philippine Plaza Hotel (now Sofitel), Coconut Palace, Folk Arts Theater and finally the Philippine International Convention Center.  Other buildings outside the complex that were built during the time of President Marcos were the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Navy Base, Traders Hotel and Legaspi Towers. 

The Philippine International Convention Center was built in a span of 23 months with Leandro Locsin as architect. Dubbed as Asia's first international convention center, it was officially opened in 1976 in time for the IMF-World Bank Meeting.

The Folk Arts Theater located infront of PICC was built by Architect Leandro Locsin as well in a span of 90 days. It was an engineering wonder to complete such a huge task in a short lead time. The Folk Arts Theater was rushed in time for the 1974 Ms. Universe Beauty Pageant to be held in the same venue. 

The whole CCP Complex was heavily criticised during its inception, referring to it as Imeldific, meaning ostentatiously extravagant. But then again, Imelda did not only concentrate in culture and the arts. She also supervised the construction of Heart Center, Lung Center, National Kidney Center, among others. All of these institutions are still being used by Filipinos up to this day. 

As with my previous tours with Carlos, it was both enlightening and entertaining. To us younger generation who have only encountered the Marcoses through history books, this tour made me understand the pros and cons of martial law. The pros were centralized leadership in a young nation such as the Philippines, public discipline, peace and security, healthy economy, managed population, etc. The cons were human rights violations, graft and corruption, cronyism, rise of communist rebels, among others.

If Carlos was your History professor in high school or college, you won't dare to be absent! Imelda 101 will be on top of your top elective classes. Carlos really made History interesting by infusing information your typical professor won't usually share. Plus the fact that the CCP is his actual stage. That's what made his tours sought after. Go and join one of his tours.

Kudos to a great man!

If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to build a house or do renovations too. That's what I learned when I started doing construction at Loreland Farm Resort and at Loremar Realty.

My familiarization with construction materials started at an early age - first there were Lego blocks. I made sure that the house I built using Lego blocks were the biggest if not the most beautiful among my siblings. A few years later when I was old enough, I would help around our small hardware store. During that time, my mother was running a garments factory while my father was running the hardware. 

Every summer, when there was no "Loreland" yet, I would help out in the store by selling concrete nails, paints, hardware materials, etc. My salary If I remember it right was about Php 10.00 to Php 30.00 a day. They would also bring me to Wilcon in Libis to shop for more materials and when their real esate company was formed, they would take me to the site then I would see them supervising construction. The white sand delivered by 10 wheeler truck was my playground. I thought all kids have that kind of playground.

The moment I joined family business, I told my boss, my mother that she cannot make me stay in the office from 8:00 to 5:00 pm. I made that quite clear to her. I just can't sit in a cushioned chair and in an airconditioned room all day being a paper pusher. It wasn't me. Some people were cut out to be one, but not me. I felt I just had to be out there supervising something from scratch to its completion. So when my boss gave me the go signal to do renovations, I felt extra excited. I was so looking forward to every morning and fix anything I could get my hands on. Another reason was that I could get my clothes dirty in the process and that laundry would be more sulit. I like it when I'm out naiinitan, that way sulit din ang sunblock. (!)

Although I wasn't trained to be an interior designer, an architect or an engineer, she gave me the green light. Remember I was supposed to take up Law in college but decided not to and instead go into business. She wasn't an architect or engineer herself anyway when she built Loreland so it's ok. If there were any difference in our styles in giving instructions to the foreman, she uses the tip of her umbrella on the soil as if its her actual drawing board. Her style worked all these years they thought Loreland was some kind of membership only club. I, on the other hand, use my handy meter tape in giving instructions and do a bit of planning ahead. I make measurements myself and identify where each furniture should be located, the distance between the door and the bed, how many tiles should be used, lighting design, accessories, etc.

Just do what you love best then it will all follow, she said. Why did I say that it takes a village to build a house or do renovations? Because it entails a team of skilled workers to make it possible. From carpenters, masons, electricians, plumbers, painters, laborers, welders, roof installers to gardeners, housekeepers, sales and marketing people and to all those working in the admin. All of them make up a team who build something from scratch to finish. From ground, up. From floor to ceiling. From bare to bright. It entails alot of close coordination and supervision just to make sure that materials are delivered, workers are present, bills are paid, etc. 

And now to share with you some of the rooms that my team made at Loreland:

Loreland is still a work in progress. As I said to some friends, it took 15 years to build unlike condos or supermalls that mushroomed in the urban jungle. As long as funds are available, many areas can still be improved. It's a cycle. When it earns, you bring it back to property so that next time guests woud visit, they would have something new to experience.

Just to share what Henerasyon is all aboout from a it's gallery introduction:

"The cool breeze of Antipolo greets it visitors and citizens alike with a feeling associated with comfort. The scenery, mostly covered with trees, old and green, shares this city with all the amenities of city living.

This city which has seen change over the years flourishes and thrives with most of its old customs and traditions intact. Antipolo's road which were then populated with pedestrians and cattle are now infested by buzzing tricycles;  a primary mode of transporation and livelihood within this city embraced by the hills. Coincidentally, it shares a trait with the patron saint, Nuestra Senora Dela Paz y Buenviaje, whose name roughly translates to Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage. Amidst the daily hustle and buste of the Antipolonians going about their daily tasks, it is still quite common to see certain trademarks that were attributed to this place. From the suman and kasoy stalls to the fancy coffee shops and big fast food chains, this place has seen change and welcomed it while retaining its old, laid back, rural city vibe in a rapidly growing urban setting."

And it is in this spirit of change, acceptance and identity that made four generations of Antipolo based artists conceptualize and materialize this show entitled "Henerasyon." With participating artists from Salingpusa, Saling Kuting and Sangviaje, the artists contributed their own thoughts, views and opinions which are more often influenced bu this idyllic yet contemporary place that each one calls home."

The sprawling compound is just amazing. Everywhere you look at is an eye candy especially for photographers who are on the look for a romantic setting. There are works of art all over the property complemented by Mexican inspired architecture, interior design, paintings and sculptures.

Although some works carry heavy or controversial themes of social realities - these were balanced with very beautiful landscape, manicured gardens, waterfalls, ponds and an ambiance like no other. 

I can practically spend a full day here just enjoying the lovely scenery or meet with friends over catered food by Bizu Patisserie. While going around I noticed that there were secret paths leading to a more romantic cottage with chairs and daybed. Truly, there's just more to see and that's what make each visit exciting.
